More and more people depend on the networking for their daily communication. Instant Messaging system(IM), same as the Electronic Mail system, are both the successful applications of the networking. Instant messaging brings in a new way of communication, which makes communication convenient and efficient. Public-oriented IM(CIM) supports not only the text messaging, but also the audio and video communication. Enterprise-oriented IM(EIM) was frequently integrated with the inner OA system of the company, on which it raises staff productivity and reduce the cost. There is an completely solution of enterprise instant messaging system in this paper. First it introduces the instant messaging system and its protocols, then compares the XMPP and SIMPLE protocol.It also introduces the main IM products. XMPP is a huge protocol system, so this paper puts emphases on the research and analysis of the XMPP core protocols. It introduces the history, system framework, data structure and the security mechanism of the XMPP.It also gives the common session interaction course on the deeply understanding of the semantics. The key point of this paper is to analyse the whole architecture of the instant messaging system, especially the server side. It states the whole architecture, component model, extendibility mechanism, module analysis and the database design of the XMPP server in details.Besides,it provides the solutions of the audio chatting based on the VoIP and the intercommunication based on the protocol gateway. At last it introduces the load-balancing and server clustering as a enterprise application. Instant messaging system is a huge system.
