Abstract: Fire is a crucial disturbance factor inMongolian pine forest. Under the approach of space for ti e substitution,
co petition intensities of treeswere explored using the long tradition of distancedependent co petition index in wt o 1h 2
fully apped plots ofMongolian pine forest across a chronosequence of different intervals of ti esincefire, inHulunBuir
sand region, InnerMongolia, China. Recruitswere also esti ated using the geostatistics ethod of kriging in a1994
burned stand (B94). Our results show that ( 1) co petition intensities of survival co ponentswere all significantly lower
than those of pre ortality agents; (2) co petition intensities of survival co ponents in B94 were significantly lower than
those of corresponding co ponents in B06 ( a 2006burned stand); ( 3) ost recruits inhabited in the gaps triggered by
surface fire inB94. Thus, co petition intensity would decrease continuously and significantly across the chronosequence.
The survival co ponents ay have ore resourcesand space to live ondue to the di inish entsof co petition intensitiesof
ste s, which are driven by surface fire, a dyna ic driving force in the developing processofMongolian pine forest.
