Abstrac:t Urbanheatisland(UHI)isoneofthemainfactorsinfluencingtheweathe,rclmiate, and
environmentovertheurbananditssurroundingarea.Inthepresentstud,yMODISlandsurfacetemperature
retrievalsat1 kmresolutionproducedbythesplit-windowalgorithmduringtheyearof2000 2005 areusedto
investigatetheUHIoverBeijingMetropolitan.ItwasfoundthatthedaytimeUHIdemonstratesdistinctive
seasonalvariation, withthemaximumduringsummerbeinglargerthan10℃ andtheminimumduringwinter
beingnegative, whichitiscalledurbancoolislandhere.Numericalsimulationshowsthattheurbancoolisland
mainlyresultsfrom thedifferenceofthesurfacethermalcharacteristicsbetweenurbanandruralarea.The
seasonalvariationofnighttimeUHIismuchles,sbeingabout5℃ throughoutayea.rBeijingissurroundedby
mountainousareainthewes,tthenorth, andthenortheas,twhoseheightreachupto2000m(SeeFigure1).In
theeastandsouthofBeijin,gtheelevationisclosetosealevelwiththecomplexityoftheunderlyingsurface.The
differentruralbaselinenotonlyinfluencesthevalueofUHIbutitsseasonalvariation.Threetypicalareaswith
