S: He/she is reading/watching TV… Call some students to do other actions, then have some pairs ask and answer. Explain the structure of the present continuous tense. Step 2 Presentation Show a picture of playing basketball and ask: T: What is the boy doing? S: He is playing basketball. Then say: If the action happened at this time yesterday,how can we talk about it? Help students say: What was the boy doing at this time yesterday? T: What was the boy doing at this time yesterday? S: He was playing basketball. Explain the usage and the structure of the past progressive tense: was/were + v.-ing Show the pictures of doing the homework, reading, going to work, waiting for the bus and shopping. Have students work in pairs , let them ask and answer. Step 3 Presentation 1a. Look at these people. Where were they and what were they doing at he time of the rainstorm? Ask them to talk about it. Then ask some students to answer the questions. Have students read the instruction in 1a and match the statements with the people in the picture. Check the answers in class.
