万方数据 万方数据 Abstract Metaphor was traditionally considered as an important rhetorical device. Conceptual metaphor theory, first proposed by Lakoff and Johnson in 1980 in Metaphors We Live By, takes metaphor in language as a manifestation of the metaphorical nature of conceptual systems. Later, there has been growing interest in studying metaphors in the fields of linguistics, psychology and anthropology, producing many more books and papers on metaphors. Cognitive linguistics supports the embodied and metaphorical nature of conceptual system. The essence of metaphor is cross-domain mapping in conceptual structure. Applying the framework of Conceptual Metaphor Theory, this thesis explores conceptual metaphors of WATER in Chinese and in English, with a view to answering the following questions: 1) What do we apply WATER to represent for? 2) When do variations occur? 3) What is the basis of congruent and alternative WATER-Metaphors? This thesis collects data from a combination of corpora, including Sinica Modern Chinese Corpus, Modern Chinese Corpus by CCL PKU, Chinese Classics Corpus in cncorpus, COCA (the Corpus of Contemporary American English) and BNC (British National Corpus) by Brigham Young University. Dictionaries and Chinese ancient anthology are also employed. And research findings are sorted according to the target domains of the metaphors examined. In this research, we find six common target domains of conceptual metaphors employing water as their source domain: MOVEMENT, TIME, MONEY, POWER, EMOTION/THOUGHTS/LANGUAGE and ABSTRACT ENVIRONMENT. Special target domains of WATER-Metaphors in Chinese are VIRTUES, PEOPLE and CLASSIFICATION. Special target domains of WATER-Metaphors in English are WEAKNESS and CHRIST SPIRIT. And some discussions are conducted about the embodied basis of WATER-metaphors.
