Taking a demonstrative approach, the paper analyses the inventory control of China Nepstar Chain Drugstore Ltd. from the perspectives of both external environment and internal operation. It also provides an in-depth study of commodity portfolio, supplying chain management, computerized forecast system and auto replenishment model. By applying the theory of supplying chain management, it aims to effectively cut down distribution cost, speed up stock turnover, improve the company’s stock management, increase commodity and capital efficiency in order to minimize operational cost and maximize profitability. Firstly the background, history and business model of Nepstar is introduced, so is the status of Nepstar within the industry and its representativeness and typicality in terms of inventory management. Also explained is the significance and value of this study for chain drugstore industry and for managerial development of this field. For commodity policy, it studies the inventory of each category at a specific point of time, analyzes different sub-categories stocking results caused by different guiding principles. Through the practice of assortment theory, it demonstratively analyzes the existing problems in current commodity lines and proposes a set of solution. Meanwhile, it presents the specific methods for stock optimization, such as supplier assessment and integration, discusses the information sharing mechanism with upstream vendors and explores the feasibility of VMI. For system forecast and auto replenishing, it defines the defect of the existing practice based on a mathematic observation on commodity flow, and suggests a corrected version of forecast system and replenishment formula.
