College of Eng. , South China Agricultural University, Guangzhou 10640, China) Abs tract: Excursions of structuresfrequencies, result from engineering vibration or discrepancies betw een structuresactual frequencies and designed ones due to calcu lation or construction errors, w ill make the vibration reduction effect of a passive tuned damper drop obviously. In order to mi prove the detun ing effect of a passive tuned damper, a controllable TMD-hybrid tanks system ( CTHTS) w as proposed. Horizontal baffles in th is system are sw itched to deal w ith the frequency excursion of a structure. The setting of parameters in the system was discussed, and the motion equations for TLCD ( tuned liquid column damper), TLD ( tuned liqu id damper) and a structurew ith THTS (TMD-hybrid tanks system ) are derived.
