It is celebrated on February 14 by the custom of sending greeting cards or gifts to express affection. The cards, known as valentines, are often designed with hearts to symbolize love. The holiday probably derives from the ancient Roman religious festival. The festival gradually became associated with a Roman priest named Valentine in the 3rd century, who restored the sight of a jailor’s blind daughter and fallen in love with her. He was clubbed to death on 14 February. St. Valentine has traditionally been regarded as the patron saint of lovers. 2) Public libraries in the U.S.: Public libraries in the U.S. are free to the public.
