In a study by Powell and Klatskin [24] in a cohort of alcoholic cirrhotic patients, the 5-year survival rate was reported as only 53% after ascites developed; this rate fell to 33% in those who continued to drink. Once ascites has become refractory, probability of survival falls to 50% at 2 years. Therefore, refractory ascites has increasingly become an indication for liver transplantation.
