1. What is loneliness? Solitude is a state of seclusion or isolation; i.e., lack of contact with people. It may stem from bad relationships, deliberate choice, infectious disease, mental disorders, or circumstances of employment or situation (see castaway). Loneliness is an unpleasant feeling, a strong sense of emptiness or solitude. It is completely subjective. 2. Why do people feel lonely? It is caused by an undesired lack of social connections , lack of friendships and loss of a significant person etc. Unlike solitude, loneliness is a subjective experience. Some people feel lonely in a relationship. Some feel lonely in a crowd. Some feel lonely because they aren’t in love. People who are lonely are desiring human contact. The sense of loneliness has in some ways increased as technology has degraded the quality of communication between people. Though people are more connected they are verbally communicating far less. Though on the bright side due to the subjective nature of loneliness if one wishes to not be lonely, they are not lonely. * Assignment Choose from the text some sentences you like and translate them into Chinese.
