W e l c o m e Benjamin Franklin Early life business enterprise born in Milk Street, in Boston,massachusettes, on January 7, in 1706 . As a young child ,worked in the shop of his father ,a soap and candler (烛台) maker. At 12, sent to assist his brother who had a printing house .There, often read a wide range of books day and night ,meanwhile, he practised improving his own style of writing. Went to Philadelphia as a young man and began his career as a printer . His weekly newspaper, The Pennsylvania Gazette (later the Saturday Evening Post ) grew quickly to be the greatest of any publication in America at that time . Public achivements Franklin involved himself in community projects. He found ,for example , the Junto ,a club for informal discussion of specific ,economic and political ideas . Also responsible for a number of practical civic improvements . Active for 30 years and developed into the American Philosophical society. He also found the country’s first circulating library and organized America’s fire-fighting and fire insurance companies. He helped to improved the local police force and to established a hospital and a college. which later became the University of Pennsylvania . Scientific achivements He invented the lighting rod(照明棒), bifocals（远近视两用眼镜）, the Franklin stove, a carriage odometer（里程表）, and the glass armonica (玻璃口琴) which employed combination of tuned glasses. He also did pioneer work in the field of weather observation .He discovered the movement of storms from west to east upon which all weather cast has been based . He also made the scientific study of the Gulf stream(墨西哥湾暖流) . He contributed to the theories of electricity and first applied the terms “positive ”and “negative ”to the electrical charges. Musical endeavors and chess Franklin played the violin the harp(竖琴), and the guitar, also composed music, notably a string quartet(弦乐四重奏曲) in early classical style, and invented a much-improved version
