Abstract: T he Ear th. s pr incipal moments of iner tia are the geodetic and astronomical fundamental Earth par ame-
ters. T he paper is devoted to the Earth. s principal moments of inertia and the related issues. Section 1 formulates
t he Eart h. s principal moments of inertia and the Earth. s flattening; Sectio n 2 deals w ith the computation of the sec-
ond- degree harmonic coeff icients in the principal ax es coo rdinate system ; Section 3 studies the directions of the
Earth. s principal axes of iner tia, and Section 4 pr esents the numerical v alues of the Earth. s pr incipal moments of in-
ertia, and of the or ientations of the Ear th. s pr incipal ax es of inertia, and of the Earth. s flattening.
