Investigation into ComputationalM ethod of
SelfEquilibrating Therm al Stresses in Concrete Bridges

Abstract: An analysis w as conducted to more accurately evaluate thermal stresses in structural
members of concrete bridges. Based on theory of elasticity, a new m ethod of evaluating self
equ ilibrating thermal stresses in concrete bridges w as proposed. W ith th is method, the transversal
stresses are solved as a p lane strain problem, and consequently the longitudinal stresses are calculated
w ith an analytic formula. Finally, an example w as given to verify the valid ity of the m ethod. The
example show s that calcu lated therm al stresses using the proposed method are almost the same as ones
obtained by a 3D FEM ( finite element method), wh ile the conventional method based on structural
mechanics can result an error over 30%.
