Aims of the Course Work Required Textbook Evaluation Syllabus References This course aims to probe into the basic conceptual structures realized in language, and to explore the relationship between the way we use language and the way we conceptualize the world. Students will be introduced to various sub-systems that project the conceptual organization of human mind. Course topics range from basic notions such as categories, prototypes, scenes, frames, etc. to the cognitive approach to metaphor and cognitive grammar. Students are also required to do concrete analyses on the above topics contrastively between English and Chinese. Pre-reading should be done in such a way that it serves you in understanding the topic(s) to be discussed each week. F.Ungerer H.J. It aims to create a scientific approach to the study of language, incorporating the tools of philosophy, neuroscience and computer science. Cognitive approaches to language were initially based on our experience of the world and the way we perceive and conceptualize it (philosophical thinking about the mind). Be distinguished from a ‘logical’ view of language.
