Conceptual Design and Structural Analysis with Entire Ship FE Model of a PentaSWACH Ro-Pax Ferry Abstract The pentamaran configuration, as one type of unconventional Super Slender Multi-Hulls(SSMH), was initially introduced by NIGEL Gee. The concept basically consists of a very-slender monohull with two pairs of lateral sponsons to provide stability. The aft two sponsons are slightly submerged while the forward pair are above surface in the still-water condition. With the outstanding advantages including minimized drag and excellent seakeeping characteristics and improved damaged stability and enlarged deck areas and convenient parallel mooring, the pentamaran configuration has aroused great interest of naval architects in international shipbuilding circle. Both theoretical research and model tests have been conducted in UK, Norway and Spain. Additionally, it is reported by NAVAL ARCHITECT that a pentamaran Ro -Ro freight ferry could possibly be ordered quite soon from IZAR for a route between Italy and Spain. As described in this paper, a series of research work have been conducted to validate the performance of PentaSWACH (Pentamaran Small Waterplane Area Central Hull), including conceptual design, hydrostatic calculation and structural design and FE analysis.
