When he was 17 years old, he travelled across Europe and Asia with his father. Finally, they arrived Beijing and met the Emperor of Yuan Dynasty— Marco was surprised by what he saw in China. Marco Polo was awed by the Summer Palace . The walls were covered in gold and sliver and the Hall was so large it could easily dine 6,000 people. He was surprised to see Chinese people using paper money in the market. He was also confused by the black stones people used to burn for fuel. The black stones were coal, but he had never seen it before! They became friends and Kublai Khan asked Marco to serve in his court. He returned to Italy. A local war broke out and he was captured and put in prison. Marco Polo ’s Oriental knowledge brought a whole new world to Europeans.He also expanded the geographical and spiritual vision as well as European’s ambitions. . .His travel sparked Europeans’ desire for the East, and the two continents distance began to narrow Doubt * All around the world, people use compasses, coal, kites, paper money and noodles. Marco Polo was born in Venice, Italy, in 1254. He didnt meet his father until the age of 15. Why? Because his father and Uncle Maffeo had gone east to China and met the great ruler, Kublai Khan The Polo brothers finally returned to Venice in 1269. Almost immediately, they planned another trip to China. In 1271, they ventured east, taking Marco with them. For three years, they traveled by ship and camel. Their odyssey finally ended when they reached the courts of Kublai Khan.
