The effects of temperature and time on the rate and extent of thermal degradation were studied in a modified steel bomb test device. The effects of chain length and branching are importantfactors in the thermal stability of hydrocarbons and similarfluids. In order to overcome the 350°C limit ofthermal stability, other classes of chemical have to be used. Keywords: thermal stability, synthetic oils, aviation, test method, degradation Final manuscript approved 23 November 1989 INTRODUCTION Oils in aviation applications have to meet many requirements. In aircraft hydraulic systems, thermal stability is of growing interest. Aerospace systems for the future with reduced oil quantities and higher engine temperatures will generate thermal stresswhich cannot be overcomewith the current state-of-the- art fluids. Therefore, thermo-stability aspects are of growing interest. Consequently,new fluids have tobe developed. Most ofthe candidate fluids are currently very expensive and only available in small quantities. For these reasons, test methods for small amounts are urgently required. In the following paper, the influencing factors of chain length and chain branching of paraffinic hydrocarbons in thermal stability are investigated to estimate the high-temperature limit. The studyis extendedto a silahydrocarbon (SiHC),which is reported to have superior thermal stability and good viscosity properties.1-6To overcome the high-temperature limitations of the fluids mentioned, the class of material has to be changed. Useful experiments have been made with the class known as perfluoropolyakylethers (FFPAES),~-~and so, for comparison purposes, one example of this
