In the model, the geom etry and boundary conditions of the rail w ere taken into account. Repeated w heel rolling and slid ing w ere smi ulated by mu ltiple translations of normal and tangential surface tractions w ith H ertz form across rail runn ing surface. The results show that the maxmi um equ ivalent plastic strain and shear strain occur on the contact surface, where the cracks in itiate easily. The plastic flow d irection in the rail near the contact surface is consistent w ith that observed in the field. An increase in yield stress of rail m aterials leads to a decrease in residual deformation, and drives the location of the absolute values of the m axmi um residual stresses to the contact surface.
