Reporting on short-sightedness Skills building 1 listening for present situations If you are listening to a TV report about a present situation, you will need to listen for the following: the present situation an explanation of the situation reasons why the situation exists how the problem can be solved A: 1. short-sightedness B No. 1 Secondary School C No. 9 Secondary School The first thing you need to do is to introduce yourself and to thank the other person for agreeing to be interviewed, e.g: Good morning/afternoon, my name is… First, I’d like to thank you for agreeing to this interview. After this, you can start to ask questions. Ask general questions first and then more detailed ones, e.g., What is the present situation regarding young people and short-sightedness? (general) Organize students into small groups and ask them to discuss solutions to protect eyesight. For example: Do eye exercises twice every day. Do not read in bed or without good lighting. Take some eyesight supplements such as Vitamins A, C and E. Examine your eyesight regularly. Have your eyes relaxed once an hour when working on computers or watching TV. Focus your eyes on green trees or grass often for a rest. Skills building 3writing a radio script When writing a radio script, you need to include: the opening (who you are) the topic explanation of what the topic is background information, including the present situation reference to other information suggestions ending Reporter: Good morning, everyone. This is David at the school radio station. We are investigating a problem - short-sightedness, which is very common among Chinese teenagers today. We have interviewed a doctor in out city about what parents and students can do to protect students’ eyesight. The doctor strongly suggests that every year students’ eyes should be tested to identify any problems, and they should not read in bed with poor lighting as well.
