The review of “Who Ruined the Humanities?” 邵正将 (作业四) First of all, I am not a student who majored in the humanities for my B.A. or one of students who are pursing a degree in English literature at the graduate level(Instead, my first major is Material Chemistry with Computer Science as my second major). It is obvious that the thrust of the author’s point can effectively be summarized in the article’s subheading: “Of course it’s important to read the great poets and novelists. But not in a university classroom, where literature has been turned into a bland, soulless competition for grades and status.” About this subject, I have a mixed feeling that on some aspects I feel the same way as the author said, but on other aspects I am not completely agree with. When I was in my senior high school, literature is the subject I am not interested in most, for the same feeling as the sentence in the article,” They were part of the leisure of everyday life”. The author also thinks that it is the classroom who ruins literature’s joy, which is considered by myself when I am sitting in the senior high school classroom having the boring literature class with the “buzz words” of my literature teacher, which make me feel disgusted. The author, Siegel’s disillusionment with the state of humanities in the education system echoes the complaints of many students who feel academia ruins good books. Yes, I keep believe that it is the teacher who teach literature in classroom that failed to enchant their students with the subject of literature, at worst, some of them fostered a sense of fruitless competition between students, encouraging them to dissect novels and reduce the power behind their writing to textbook dryness. The literature class in some content should be considered to be the ‘job training’ for some exams, when it comes to senior high school student, it is the so-called “college entrance examinations”, which forces literature to be taught just like a science subject
