Stirling Engine
Abstract
Design and manufacturing of the small-scale, -type Stirling engines
are of major concerns in this study. A theorectical model regarding the
thermodynamic characteristics of the working medium in the Stirling
engine has been developed to predict the cyclic variations in pressure and
fluid velocity during operation. The -type and the free-piston type
Stirling engines are of the same kind with coaxial piston-displacer
structure; therefore, the design of -type Stirling engines can be
partially further applied to the design of the free-piston in the future. The
present study uses the rhombic-drive mechanism which is particularly
valid to a small-scale, high pressure system. Three versions of the engine
prototypes have been completed, and their relative performances have
been tested. In accordance with theoretical model developed as well as
the performance test data for the prototypes, improvement in the design
phase for the Stirling engines is attempted.
