Signed Dated iii Abstract Age has long been a rather controversial issue to researchers and linguists in the field of the Second Language Acquisition (SLA). This thesis, through introducing the definition of the Critical Period Hypothesis (the CPH) and the viewpoints of both its supporters and the opposers, firstly reviews the major researches about the role of age in SLA, and compares proficiencies of SLA between children and adults from angles of phonetics acquisition, grammar acquisition, and morphology and syntax acquisition. Then it analyzes causes of age effects on SLA on the basis of physiology, cognition and emotion. Finally, it points out the five enlightments to the practice of foreign language teaching and learning from the relationship between age and the SLA.
