Dubbing the bar a “den of demons” (yaoku), this newspaper publishes a vehemently tarnishing report, which eventually leads to the close of the bar. Transformative Remembrances Niezi, arguably the first important contemporary Chinese-language novel explicitly treating male-male erotic relations, is often hailed as a “tongzhi novel” (tongzhi xiaoshuo) today,21 although, as mentioned above, the word tongzhi had not acquired its current queer meanings at the time of the novel’s first appearance.
