Dubbing the bar a “den of demons” (yaoku), this newspaper publishes a vehemently tarnishing report, which eventually leads to the close of the bar. Transformative Remembrances Niezi, arguably the first important contemporary Chinese-language novel explicitly treating male-male erotic relations, is often hailed as a “tongzhi novel” (tongzhi xiaoshuo) today,21 although, as mentioned above, the word tongzhi had not acquired its current queer meanings at the time of the novel’s first appearance. Can the boys in Niezi be called tongzhi? It is true that as prostitutes,the boys centrally featured in this novel are involved in male-male sexual acts; however, as many of these boys are said to be forced into prostitution by various external forces (e.g. poverty, family abuse, and various catastrophes), their image differs conspicuously from the (stereo)typical image of the contemporary tongzhi, whose gayness is often perceived as originating from within.
