Chapter 6 Cities and places of interest London London is a major global city and one of the worlds largest financial centres. Greater London : the City of London and the City of Westminster (home to the UK’s national government). Greater London covers an area of 609?square miles (1,579?km2). The Thames river crosses the city from the south-west to the east, dividing the city into northern (populous and major area ) and southern part (less densely built-up). London West end: Londons main entertainment and shopping district, rich area; Oxford street, Piccadilly circus, Covent Garden, Leicester Square East end: poor area, Lower Lea Valley (Olympic Park) The Lower Lea Valley is the area surrounding the River Lea (or Lee), which runs along the boundary of the London Boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest and Newham and into the River Thames. Piccadilly Circus a famous road junction and public space of Londons West End in the City of Westminster . Covent Garden Covent Garden (考文特花园) is a public square with rich history, beautiful architecture and attractive cultural atmosphere. Leicester Square Cinema and Entertainment centre of the capital. administration The administration of London is formed of two tiers—a city-wide, strategic tier and a local tier. City-wide administration is coordinated by the Greater London Authority, while local administration is carried out by 33 smaller authorities. The Greater London Authority (GLA) consists of two elected parts; the Mayor of London, who has executive powers, and the London Assembly, who scrutinise the mayors decisions and can accept or reject his budget proposals each year. The Greater London Authority is based in City Hall, Southwark Economy London is a major centre for international business and commerce and is one of three command centres for the world economy, with New York City and Tokyo.
