What if you could spend a few hours at a senior center and pay down your college debt in the
process? Breanna Zwart, a 2007 graduate of a University in Pittsburgh, is doing just that. One of
the activities that earned Zwart $100 toward the loan’s principal: volunteering for five hours at a
local senior center’s spa day. After studying public policy, which involved lots of number
calculation and cost-benefit analyses, Zwart chose the more social volunteer experiences also
partly to balance out her résumé.
Making money in exchange for performing charity work is the latest trend in the world of
creative college repayment strategies—a move that started with simple “crowdfunding”
techniques, raising capital through small donations from lots of people. In its most rudimentary
form, crowdfunding involves a student sending a group email asking for financial help, which
would get forwarded to friends and strangers alike.
In 2008, Max Stephenson was an 18-year-old freshman starting at New York University and
could come up with only half the money for his $53,000-a-year tuition bill. So he hit up his friends
for help, and then asked friends of friends via email. Stephenson’s email to 300 people went viral
and his story made headlines. Two years later he’s raised more than $12,000—with donations
ranging from 68 cents sent by kids to a $2,000 check sent six months ago. And if Stephenson can
succeed, why can’t others? His story inspired students struggling with soaring education costs to
reach out to the masses and ask for microdonations. Today the popularity of social networking
sites enables students to use the power of an even wider network to solicit help.
