Institutionalisation entails building an infrastructure and culture that supports the methods, practices, and procedures of the business so that they endure after those who originally defined them have gone. And, before long, you’ll have groups saying.... “That’s the way we do things around here.” * * * * * * * * Instructor’s Notes: Read the four bullets to the students, pausing after each one to ask a question: - Does this happen in their organisation? - have them discuss. Explain to the students: In spite of this ad hoc process, level 1 organisations frequently develop products that work, even though they may exceed the budget and schedule. Success depends on the competence of the people in the organisation and cannot be repeated unless the same individuals are assigned to the next project. Therefore, at level 1, capability is a characteristic of the individuals, not of the organisation. * Instructor’s Notes: Explain to the students: At level 1, the software process is an amorphous entity - a black box - and visibility into a project’s processes are limited. Since there is usually no up-front planning carried out, activities are poorly defined, and managers have an extremely difficult time understanding just where in the process they are in relation to progress and activities. Requirements flow into the software process in an uncontrollable manner, hopefully a product comes out.
