Dr. Pemberton is a druggist. He wants to make a soft drink out of coca leaves. He mixed the leaves with kola nuts, water, sugar, and other ingredients ,and called his mixture ”syrup”. He wanted to test the new drink in a popular drinking place owned by Willis Venable. By mistake , Venable mixed the soda water instead of the still water. The people who tried the mixture liked it very much and Coca-Cola was born. Dr. Pemberton’s partner and bookkeeper, Robin- son, named the product, something he felt would be easily remembered by customers. The product was first sold at drugsto- re fountains for 5 cents a glass, and sold an average of 13 glasses per day during 1886. During the first year, Dr.Pemberton earned $50,00; however ,he spent $73.96 on adverti- sing alone. Later, in 1889 ,Joseph Whitehead and Benjamin Thomas secured the exclusive rights from the company to battle and sell Coca-Cola throughout the U.S. By 1894, Joseph Biedenharn started bottling the Coca-Cola product
