They contain covered statues of Lincoln and Jefferson respectively and are open to the air and the public. As it happens, a problem arose with the Jefferson Memorial but not the Lincoln Memorial. Birds would flock to the Jefferson Memorial, land on the statue and soil it. It would rapidly get dirty and would often need cleaning. Unfortunately, the required cleaning method involved blasting the statue and it was gradually eroding.
