Whitman(1819-1892) and Dickinson(1830-1886): 19th Century American Poetry . Place in American literature: 1.Two major or great poets in 19th century American literary cannon. 2.percusor to serious modern poetry, especially for the imagists. Greatness in Different Direction: The two are of entirely different visions, styles and personalities. Whitman :desired to be a public poet and confidently addressed the public who found him distasteful in certain respects. Dickinson, however, was private to the extent of being a recluse. Scarcely any of her poems were published in her lifetime but won appreciation and recognition after her death. Walt Whitman’ unique impact on Chinese literature and readers: 1. His poetry made a huge impact on Chinese new poetry in the May Fourth Movement, especially on Guo Moruo. 2.From Guo Moruo’s translations and Guo’s own early poetry that was modeled after Whitman, we will be able to feel, albeit vicariously ,the sweeping power of Whitman’s rhythm and scope. Biography: 1. working class background on Long Island, five years of schooling and lots of loafing. 2. variety of jobs and first-hand knowledge of life and people in the new world. 3.1848’ experience of travelling to Mississippi heartland, which furnished him material and spirit for his Leaves of Grass which came out in 1855. 4.worked as a volunteer nurse during the civil war and in the meantime made revisions of his Leaves of Grass. 5. suffered a paralytic stroke in 1873 and died in 1892 The Revolutionary Spirit Embodied in Leaves of Grass: Formal Innovativeness: 1.This small volume of 12 poems had a green cover that showed no name of the author. 2. Opposite the title page was an engraving of Whitman with a broad brimmed hat casually angled on the head, wearing an unbuttoned shirt and workingmans trousers.
