Saint Patricks Day has come to be associated with everything Irish: anything green and gold, shamrocks (三叶草)and luck. Most importantly, to those who celebrate its intended meaning, St. Patricks Day is a traditional day for spiritual renewal(获得新生 )and offering prayers for missionaries(传教士) worldwide. Leprechauns (小矮人) is the role of legend. They are shoemakers of faery(精灵) who are very short but move fast. And they like playing tricks on people. Like to tie people’s two shoelaces(鞋带) together, then they will fall down when standing up. One theory is that it is the day when St. Patrick died. Since the holiday began in Ireland, it is believed that as the Irish spread out around the world, they took with them their history and celebrations. The biggest observance of all is, of course, in Ireland. With the exception of restaurants and pubs, almost all businesses close on March 17th. Being a religious holiday as well, many Irish attend mass, where March 17th is the traditional day for offering prayers for missionaries worldwide before the serious celebrating begins. . Saint Patricks Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Newfoundland(纽芬兰) and Labrador (拉布拉多) and in Montserrat (蒙特色拉特岛) . It is also widely celebrated by the Irish diaspora(离散的犹太人), especially in places such as Great Britain, Canada, the United States, Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand, among others. . Today, St. Patricks Day is probably the most widely celebrated saints day in the world. In Great Britain cities with a large Irish population, St. Patrick’s Day is a very big deal. Big cities and small towns alike celebrate with parades(游行), “wearing of the green,”playing Irish music and singing Irish songs, Irish food and drink, and activities for kids such as crafts, coloring and games. Some communities even go so far as to dye rivers or streams green! Green is everywhere on St. Patrick’s Day. People wear green clothes, green shirts, green socks, green ties, or jus
