They tried to forget about the past and ignore the future. The U.S. traditional values, ideology and political idea were all failed tragically after the World War One. In this decade, America became the wealthiest country in the world, but the people at that time were full of desperation and they had no objects in their lives. 一、The USA in 1920s美国整体背景 19世纪20年代的美国人迫不及待的享乐，他们想忘记过去，无视未来。一战后，美国传统的价值观、思想观和政治理念都经历了悲剧性的失败。虽然表面上是美国繁荣富足的十年，但这个时期的人却是前所未有的绝望，生活没有目标。 二、Striking gap between the rich and the poor贫富差距 Tom represented the old noblesse（旧贵族阶级） of the U.S., and Wilson represented the poor class. Wilson was the owner of an auto repair shop, which was dusty and in a mess. The comparison of Tom and Wilson is actually the comparison of the rich class and the poor class. 二、Striking gap between the rich and the poor贫富差距 Tom代表了美国的旧贵族阶级，Wilson代表了美国的贫穷阶级。Wilson开着一家汽车修理铺，铺子里灰蒙蒙的，很是凌乱。Tom与Wilson的对比其实就是美国富人阶级与穷人阶级之间的对比，贫富差距很严重。 三、Money worship拜金主义 Tom was very keen on visiting places of ill fame. He has never been satisfied, although he has married pretty Daisy. Daisy knew that Tom was not faithful to her, but she was eager for his property. So, she just kept the unhappy marriage. By the views of Nick, it reflected the phenomenon of flourishing of the money worship.
