His writing encompasses many poetic styles and includes some of the finest idyllic poetry in the language. * His poetry， whether based on personal life or classic legend， reflects the doubt and the faith, the grief and the joy of the English people of his time which is an age of fast social changes. * He has perfect control of the sound of English. His poetry is noted for its lyrical beauty and metrical charm. * His works are not only the products of the creative imagination of a poetic genius but also products of a long and rich English heritage. * His poetry was characterized by experiments with new styles and new ways of expression. * Tennyson was severely criticized by Imagist poets in the early twentieth century for his affectation and wordiness. Topic 2—Major works, thematic concerns and artistic features Major works “Poems”(1842) The collection contains the famous dramatic monologue “Ulysses”, and the narrative poem “Morted’ Arthur”. “Ulysses” Written in blank verse, it is a story about Ulysses, king of the Ithaca Island, a Trojan War hero. The poem conveys that the value and significance of human life lies in living it to the full, to do and achieve something new when one is alive. The line To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield is from Tennyson’s Ulysses. 2. “The Princess” (1847) Written in blank verse, it deals with the theme of women’s rights and position both at home and in the society. 3. “In Memoriam” (1850) This elegy in memory of his dead friend Arthur Hallam is generally considered his great work.
