The therapeutic strategy of Alzheimer’s disease: neurotrophic factors

Abstract: Neurotrophic factors (NTFs) are secreted peptides essential for survival and phenotypic development
in developing and adult neurons. Alterations in the neurotrophic levels either due to age, genetic background
or other factors might contribute to neurodegeneration. Neurotrophic factors as therapeutic agents can prevent
the degeneration of cholinergic neurons and improve the cognitive function of patients with Alzherimer’s disease
(AD). To develop NTFs for the treatment of AD is a promising treatment strategy. In this paper, we review the
function of NGF, BDNF, NT-3, FGF, IGF, and their mechanism as well as therapeutic application during the
cause of AD.
