Family is defined （下定义）as a domestic （家庭的）group of people with some degree of kin ship — whether through blood, marriage, or adopti on. Ideally each child is nu rtured, respected, and grows up to care for others and develop stro ng and healthy relati on ships. This does not mean that it is always easy to make and keep frien ds; it just means that we share the goal of havi ng strong relati on ships. “ Family ” includes your siblings and parents, as well as relatives who you may not in teract with every day, such as your cous ins, aun ts, un cles, gran dpare nts, and steppare nts. These are probably the people you are closest to and with whomyou spend the most time. Having healthy relati on ships with your family members is both importa nt and difficult. Families in the 21st cen tury come in all shapes and sizes: traditi on al, sin gle pare nt, and ble nded （more tha n one family together in the same house） — just to n ame a few. No matter the “type ” of family you have, there are going to be highs and lows — good times and bad. Many times, however, families become blocked （阻止）in their relati on ships by hurt, an ger, mistrust, and con fusi on. These emoti ons are n atural and no rmal, and few families do not have at least a few experiences with them. By making a few simple changes in the way we look at the world and deal with other people, it is possible to create happier, more stable relati on ships. Families n eed to be un its of mutual （相互的）cari ng and support; they can be sources of life long strength for all individuals （个人； 个体 ）. It is n ever too late to begi n the process of improv ing family relati on ships — even if they are already of good quality — by develop ing some simple skills.
