Ltd., Japan Abstract Bengaluru is a capital city of Karnataka state in India. It is known as IT capital and important industry hub in south India. The traffic congestion is becoming serious problem in Bengaluru due to rapid urbanisation and it hinders smooth business activities. Under such situation, developing ITS in Bengaluru metropolitan area is planned, assisted by Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA). It aims to mitigate the traffic congestion by guiding vehicles from congested route to alternative route and enhancing modal shift through disseminating realtime traffic information. The probe system is considered to collect realtime traffic data because of the advantage that it does not require a large amount of infrastructure cost with less maintenance instead of installing a number of roadside equipment. A technical study on probe data (referred to as ‘the Study’ hereinafter) was conducted using sample probe data available in Bengaluru to examine usability of the probe data under the location condition.
