Interpreting skills (10 mins)
Interpreters are more confident and able to finish interpretation more smoothly and successfully, if they master an large number of useful expressions and have diverse ways of expressing the same messages. Therefore, interpreters need to accumulate a large quantity of useful vocabulary, sentence structures with the same meanings.
1) For instance, “增加20%” can be translated into “increase by 20%”; “rise by 20%”; “with an increase of 20%”; “with a rise of 20%”.
2) “过去的二十年里,少数民族地区的经济社会得到不断的发展。” can be translated as follows:
The past two decades have witnessed continued economic and social development in the ethnic minority areas.
People in the ethnic minority areas have achieved continued economic and social development over the past two decades.
The economy and society of the ethnic minority areas have been developed continuously over the past two decades.
Over the past two decades, continued economic and social development has been attained in the minority concentrated areas.
(2) Fluency in interpreting is very essential. There are 3 ways to improve fluency in interpreting:
1)Reciting useful sentence structures
2)Shadowing: read after a piece of speech with the script again and again to accumulate useful expressions.
3) Spontaneous speech: practice useful expressions, pay attention to the way of delivering a speech, manners, and the ability to org
