When I joined ABB in the mid 70s, I got a phone like this on my desk. It was easy to use, but the functionality was very limited. I could use the rotary dial wheel to make calls within the company, but if I wanted to call out, I had to ask an operator at the switchboard to connect me. I was not that technology prevented direct calls, but the management were afraid to let this new and scary technology be used at the employees discretion. We were working on the worlds first all electric microprocessor controlled robot. And this is the user interface we gave it. A cast iron box with a small alpha-numeric display and lots of buttons.
