* * How can we improve communication with people at work? Noise is anything that interferes with the communication process. How Does Noise Interfere with the Communication Process? What makes it hard to communicate effectively Active listening helps people say what they really mean. 1 Constructive feedback is specific, timely, and relevant. 2 Office spaces can be designed to encourage interaction and communication 3 Transparency and openness ensure that accurate information is shared 4 Appropriate use of technology can facilitate more and better communication 5 Sensitivity and etiquette can im prove cross-cultural communication 6 Active listening helps people say what they really mean When people talk, they are trying to communicate something. That something may or may not be what they are saying. This is why we must be so good at listening. We would all be a lot wiser if we listened more—not just hearing the words, but listening and not thinking about what you are going to say. Active listening is the process of taking action to help others say what they really mean. It requires being sincere while listening to someone, and trying to find the full meaning of a message. It also involves being disciplined, controlling ones emotions, and withholding premature evaluations that turn off rather than turn on the other partys willingness to communicate. “Don’t you think employees should be promoted on the basis of seniority?” Passive listener’s response: “No, I don’t!” Active listener’s response: “It seems to you that they should, I take it?” What does the supervisor expect us to do about these out-of-date computers? Passive listeners response: Do the best you can, I guess. Active listeners response: Youre pretty disgusted with those machines, arent you? Active listening skills Listen for message content: Try to hear exactly what content is being conveyed in the message. Listen for feelings: Try to identify how the source feels about the content in the message. Respond
