Summarize main content
State the main idea
Provide background data and
explain the main idea
Request action, summarize the message, or
present a closing thought.
• Summarize the main idea and provide quick identification in
the subject line;
• Do not write it as a complete sentence with end punctuation,
just phrases. Write in an abbreviated style, often without
articles (a, an, the);
• Include a verb to make your subject line “talking” if possible;
• Avoid meaningless one-word subject lines, such as Hello,
Important, help, issue, problem, or misleading ones such as
Great Deal, which may trigger spam filters.
• Consider using identifying labels, such as: “ACTION” (which
means action required, please respond); “FYI” (for your
information, no response needed); “RE” (this is a reply to
another message); “URGENT” (please respond immediately).
• Type in upper- and lowercase letters -- never in all UPPER- or
lowercase.
• NEVER leave the subject line blank.
