wsandtheWindowsAPIoverthepastdecade,VisualBasicandC++haveundergoneexpansio n.AlthoughVisualBasicandC++haveendedupashugelypowerfullanguagesasaresultofthi s,bothlanguagesalsosufferfromproblemsduetothelegaciesofhowtheyhaveevolved.
InthecaseofVisualBasic6andearlier,themainstrengthofthelanguagewasthefactthatitw assimpletounderstandanddidn ’ tmakemanyprogrammingtaskseasy,largelyhidingthedeta
ilsoftheWindowsAPIandtheCOMcomponentinfrastructurefromthedeveloper.Thedown sidetothiswasthatVisualBasicwasnevertrulyobject-oriented,sothatlargeapplicationsqui cklybecomedisorganizedandhardtomaintain.Aswellasthis,becauseVisualBasic ’ ssyntax wasinheritedfromearlyversionsofBASIC(which,inturn,wasdesignedtobeintuitivelysim
pleforbeginningprogrammerstounderstand,ratherthantowritelargecommercialapplicati ons),itdidn ’ treallylenditselftowell-structuredorobject-orientedprograms.
C++,ontheotherhand,hasitsrootsintheANSIC++languagedefinition.Itisn ’ tcompletely
ANSIcompliantforthesimplereasonthatMicrosoftfirstwroteitsC++compilerbeforetheA NSIdefinitionhadbecomeofficial,butitcomesclose.Unfortunately,thishasledtotwoproble
ms.First,ANSIC++hasitsrootsinadecade-oldstateoftechnology,andthisshowsupinalack ofsupportformodernconcepts(suchasUnicodestringsandgeneratingXMLdocumentation ),andinsomearchaicsyntaxstructuresdesignedforthecompilersofyesteryear(suchasthese parationofdeclarationfromdefinitionofmemberfunctions).Second,Microsofthasbeensim ultaneouslytryingtoevolveC++intoalanguagethatisdesignedforhigh-performancetaskso
nWindows,andinordertoachievethatthey ’ vebeenforcedtoaddahugenumberofMicrosoft-specifickeywordsaswellasvariouslibrariestothelanguage.
