Mukden had been the Manchu capital from 1636 to 1644,before they established the Qing Dynasty at Peking. In his spare time,he measured architecture of the “Northern Tombs”intheoutskirtsofthecity. For the first time, he made careful measurements of the buildings, taking field notes on which final drawings could be based. Liang tried to save them by shaming the official with the argument, “Demolition is easy, preservation is difficult. Once they are gone they cannot be restored. Why do you choose to destroy them?” As was to happen all too often in lateryears,hisadvicewasrejected.
