INSPEC developed the treatment codes from experience in operating SDI services. For certain types of search, the normal subject-descriptive data elements cannot meet your needs - for example, you might be interested only in theoretical papers, or else in experimental results. Similarly you might want to be able to retrieve only the more general papers on the subject. To meet these needs, INSPEC uses Treatment Codes to indicate the particular aspects of the subject which are dealt with in a document. There are nine codes, described below: A. Applications - assigned when the document describes the actual use or implementation of an instrument, device, method, technique, computer program or physical effect where some specific application is described or envisaged. B. Bibliography/Literature Survey - indicates documents containing a bibliography or significant list of reference 50 references. F. Economic/Commercial/Market Survey - applied where the document deals with some economic or commercial aspect, e.g. cost, pricing, market forecast, etc. G. General or Review - this Code distinguishes documents which could give an overall view of a subject. It includes general approaches, overviews, ‘state-of-the-art’ reviews, and introductory articles. N. New Development - used where a claim of novelty (in the patent sense) might be made. P. Practical - indicates that the document is meant to be of direct practical use and so is likely to be of particular interest to engineering and design staff. R. Product Review - introduced in 1985 and used to distinguish all product reviews. Includes product comparisons, tables and buyer’s guides.Treatment C
