Lesson 8, Part 1:The Second World WarThe Context in EuropeAfter the First World War, many people in Britain and France were tired of war. Thus, many people in these countries wanted to avoid war at any price.Adolf HitlerTherefore, when Adolf Hitler started leading the German military into other parts of Europe, some people in Britain and France thought it was best to allow this in order to maintain peace. This policy became known as appeasement.Appeasement – “Peace in Our Time”Among those supporting Appeasement was the British Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlein.Chamberlein met with Hitler and tried to negotiate a deal to maintain peace. When he returned from their meeting he very happy, because he thought that he had saved the country from fighting another war. But, of course, Hitler did not keep his promise…Despite their agreement, Hitler continued to move into other parts of Europe – which was very embarrassing for Chamberlein. Thus, it became clear that appeasement had failed, and Chamberlein, who was humiliated, had to go on the radio to tell the British people that the country was at war with Germany again. After that, Chamberlein was soon replaced as Prime Minister with someone who was considerably tougher, and who had been sceptical of Hitler from the beginning – Winston Churchill. In America…The American people – much like those in Britain and France – were tired of war.For this reason, many people did not want to become directly involved in the war in Europe.Franklin RooseveltHowever, President Franklin Roosevelt believed that America could not avoid becoming involved. Thus, even before America became officially involved, the US Government began sending supplies to its key allies, Britain and France. And then one event changed everything…Before the Attack on Pearl Harbor…There had been bad feelings between America and Japan for many years before the attack on Pearl Harbor.People throughout the West were disgusted by what the Japanese had done in Nanjing.
