The following procedures should therefore be followed. MF 1) A vessel operating in an A2 sea area which receives a MF DSC distress alert on 2,187.5 kHz should not transmit a DSC acknowledgement, notwithstanding any prompt on the DSC equipment; it can be assumed the alert will have been heard and acknowledged by a coast station. Passage 17 2) A ship operating outside of an A2 sea area which receives a distress alert which is, beyond doubt, in its vicinity, should send an acknowledgement as soon as possible using RT on 2,182 kHz. If further DSC distress alerts are heard from the same source, a DSC acknowledgement may be sent. RCCs should be informed through a coast station or CES and assistance rendered as required and appropriate. HF 3) On receipt of an HF/DSC distress alert a vessel should not transmit an acknowledgement. 4) If subsequent DSC distress alerts are received or it is clear there has been no acknowledgement by a coast station, the vessel must relay the distress alert.
