欧盟对进口中国纺织品展开调查 欧盟对进口中国纺织品展开调查 EU laun ches in vestigatio n into textile imports 欧盟对进口中国纺织品展开调查 The Europea n Commissi on (EC) on Friday laun ched an investigation into nine categories of textile and apparel products imported from China. China ' Ministry of Commerce reacted by saying the evidenee the EC used could no t justify the move. The EC claimed that its textile imports from Chi na rose as much as 500 per cent in some categories in the first quarter over the same period of last year. “Howeverthe import volume for last year was the sum of 15 European countries while that for this year includes imports to 10 new EU members, ” said Chong Quan, the ministry ' s spokesman. Besides, the spokesma n said, on ly one item un der in vestigati on saw a drop in price in the first three mon ths of the year, i ndicat ing that China ' s textile exporters were not disturbing the EU market with low prices. The EC officially announ ced it would start the in vestigati on into products ranging from men' strousers and socks to stockings on Thursday. The in vestigatio n, proposed by EU Trade Commissi oner Peter Man dels on last week, will last for a maximum of 60 days. Chi na and the EU are expected to hold in formal talks on the issue in the coming weeks. Carlos Fort in, act ing secretary gen eral of the Un ited Nati ons Conference on Trade and Development, suggested the two sides solve textile trade frictions through negotiation and opposed the hasty move of the EC. Director of the World Trade Organization General Supachai Pan itchpakdi was quoted by the Wall Street Jour nal earlier this week as say ing that EU coun tries and the Un ited States should wait at least a year before tak ing protective measures.
