But an int e rnat ional team of resea rchers, incl uding Dr. Richmond from G W 's Columbian Coll eg e of Arts and Sciences,have discovered that human wal king up right, m ay have o riginat ed mill i ons of y ea rs ago a s an ad aptation to carrying scarce, high- qu ality resou rces. Th e team of resea rcher s from t he U. S., Engla nd, Japan and Portug al inves tigated the b ehavior of m o dern-day chimpanzees as the y compe ted for food resources, in an e ff ort to underst and w hat ecological setting s would lead a l ar ge ape — one th at resemb le s the 6 m il l ion- y ear o ld ancestor w e shar ed in common with li vin g chimpanzees — to walk on tw o legs. “These chi mpan zee s prov ide a m odel of the ec ologi cal c onditions under whi ch our earlie st ance stors might have begun walking on two legs, , sa id Dr. Richm ond. The research fi ndings suggest that chim pan zees switch to movin g on t wo li m bs instead of f our in situat ions where they need t o mon opo lize a resour ce.
