He is said to be “undersized” w ith “short legs” and a “round stomach”.The issuehere is not the accuracyof Tolstoys description— it seemsnot that far off from historicalaccounts— buthis choiceof facts: other thingsthat couldbe saidof the man are not said. Weare meantto understand the differenceof a w arring commanderin the bodyof a fat little Frenchman. Tolstoys Napoleoncould be any man w andering in the streetsand putting a little of pow deredtobaccoup hisnose—and that isthepoint. It is a w ay the novelist usesto show the moral nature of a character. And it turnsout that, asTolstoyhasit, Napoleonis a crazyman. In a scenein Book Three of War and Peace, the w ars hav ing reachedthe critical year of 1812, Napoleon receiv es a representative from the Tsar(沙皇 ) , w ho has comew ith peaceterms. Napoleonis v ery angry: doesnt he hav e more army? He, not the Tsar,is the oneto maketheterms. He w ill destroyall of Europeif his army is stopped,“That is w hat youw ill hav e gainedby engagingme in the w ar!” he shouts. And then, Tolstoyw rites, Napoleon“walked silently severaltimesup anddownthe room, hisfat shouldersmovingquickly”. Still later, after rev iew ing his army amid cheering crow ds, Napoleon invitesthe shakenRussianto dinner. “He raisedhis hand to the Russians... face,” Tolstoyw rites,and “taking him bythe ear pulledit gently... ”Tohav e ones ear pulled by the Emperor w as consideredthe greatesthonor and mark of fav or at the French court. “Well, w ell, w hy dont you sayanything?” saidhe, asif it w as ridiculousin his presenceto respectany one but himself, Napoleon.
