Students will be able to master the new words such as “flashlight”, “beat” and so on. 2. Students will be able to master some new phrases such as “die down ”, “in a mess” and so on. 3. Students will be able to understand the general meaning of the passage by using different kinds of reading skills. 4. Students will have the awareness of helping each other as well as cooperation. Teaching aid: PowerPoint Teaching procedures: Before reading Step 1 Lead-in (1 minute) Invite students to enjoy a video of storm. What can you see in the video? Step 2 Presentation (3 minutes) Use some pictures and dynamic images to help students understand the meaning of some key words and new phrases. While reading Step 3 Skimming(1minute) Skim the passage and match the main ideas with the paragraphs. Step 4 Scanning (2minutes) Scan the passage and answer the two questions. 1. What was the weather like before the heavy rain started? 2. What was the neighborhood like after the storm? Step 5 Read for details(12 minutes) Read the paragraphs one by one and finish the three tasks.(learning paper) Step 6 Oral reading(4 minutes) Read Paragraphs 1.2.3 with the recording. Read the last paragraph after the recording. Read aloud by themselves. Step 7 Exercise 3b (3 minutes) Complete the sentences using information from the passage. Step 8 Competition-The Storm (5-6 minutes) Answer some questions about the passage. After reading Step 9 Free talk (2 minutes) What other disasters can bring people closer together? Step 10 Make posters (8-10 minutes) Work in groups and try to make some posters about how we can help each other in times of difficulty.
