I. Teaching aims
1. Language goals
1) Key vocabulary: zoo, panda, tiger, elephant, koala, lion, giraffe, cat, cute, lazy, smart, beautiful …
2) Target language
a. – Why do you like pandas? – Because they’re kind of interesting.
b. – Why don’t you like tigers? – Because they’re really scary.
c. – Where are lions from? –They’re from South Africa.
2. Ability goals
1) Be able to describe animals and express preferences.
2) Train the students’ communicative competence.
3. Moral goals
Animals are our friends. Humans and animals should live in peace.
Ⅱ. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Warming up and revision
1. Greetings.
2. T leads in with the theme song and the poster of ZOOTOPIA.
Step 2 Presentation
1. Look at the poster of ZOOTOPIA.
2. Learn some animal words.
T: What animals can you see in the poster?
S: I can see an elephant. (lion, giraffes, bull, bear, rabbit, fox, sheep, goat, deer…)
3. 1a: Welcome to the zoo (a picture)
1)Match the words with the animals in the picture.
2)Check the answers with the class.
Step 3 Listening
1. Listen to the tape and finish 1b.
2. Check the answers with the class.
3. Listen to the tape and answer the questions.
4..Description words: cute, beautiful, interesting, lazy, smart, fun…
Step 4 Pairwork
1. Practice the conversation in 1b with your partner.
2. Make their own conversations using the map of the zoo.
3. Act out their conversations.
4. More description words: clever, lovely, large, heavy, scary…
Step 5 Play a game: Guess who I am
Present Adverb of degree: very, kind of, really, so…
Step 6 Listening
1. Listen to the recording. Let Ss do 2a.
2. Listen again. Let Ss do 2b.
3. Listen and read the conversation.
Step 7 Role-play
1. Listen to the conversation and answer the questions.
