Descriptions of the Main Courses Course Course Descriptions Structure Mechanics(A) Credits:5 Total Lecture Hours:?80 Programs applicable:?Civil Engineering Status in the Curriculum:?Key course/Compulsory Pre-requisites: Theory of Mechanics, Material Mechanics. Structural mechanics is the compulsory key course for the students majored in civil engineering. The aim of the course is to provide students with the basic principles and methods in analyzing framed structures based on the knowledge of Theory of Mechanics and Material Mechanics; the capabilities of structure analysis and calculation and the firm foundations for the study of advanced courses, structure design and scientific research. The course deals mainly with the kinematic analysis of plane systems, determination of internal forces and displacements of statically determinate structures; analysis of statically indeterminate structures by force method, displacement method and the moment distribution method respectively; the influence lines and its applications; and matrix analysis of the structures. It is course designed to familiarize the entering student with the nature and scope of civil engineering and its component specialty areas. The objective of this course is to give the students a fundamental outline about the courses designed for the program and the requirement to complete the program. Topics covered in this course include the introduction of Civil Engineering as a discipline as well as general expression of all kind of civil works, the outline and requirements of knowledge and ability of the program, outline of building structure, bridge structure, geotechnical and underground works, road and rail infrastructures and the fundamental concept of Engineering managements.
